She was born in Marion, Alabama on April 27, 1927 to Obadiah and Bernice Scott, and grew up in a family deeply committed to racial justice. She studied voice and violin at the New England Conservatory of Music and Antioch College, and met her husband Martin Luther King Jr. in a church choir. Together, the couple led the civil rights movement in voter registration and desegregation throughout the 1950s and 1960s.
