Rosalynn Carter (née Smith), died peacefully on Wednesday, November 19, 2023 at age 96. Rosalynn was born in Plains, Georgia, on August 18, 1927. She was the daughter of Wilburn Edgar Smith and Allie Murray Smith, and she had three siblings. In 1945, Rosalynn married the then-future President, Jimmy Carter, with whom she had four children: Jack, Chip, Donnel, and Amy. Rosalynn dedicated her life to public service. Following in her husband's footsteps, Rosalynn served two terms in the White House as the first lady of the United States from 1977 to 1981. In her time in the spotlight, Rosalynn demonstrated effective leadership and dedication to preserving human rights, health and well-being. Her involvement in the Carter Administration earned her public recognition and several honorary doctorates. Long after her time as first lady, Rosalynn remained an advocate for mental health awareness and became a spokesperson for seniors about the importance of diet and exercise. Rosalynn Carter will be remembered as a loving wife and mother, a woman of integrity and a dedicated public servant. She is survived by her four children, their respective spouses, thirteen grandchildren, three great grandchildren, her siblings and numerous other friends and family. May she rest in peace.
