Cynthia Lennon, the first wife of musician and former Beatles member John Lennon, passed away on April 1st, 2015, aged 75. She was an artist, music promoter, and author best known for her marriage to the Beatle. She was born Cynthia Powell on September 10, 1939 in Blackpool, Lancashire, the daughter of a candy shop owner. At age 16, she moved to Liverpool to study at Liverpool College of Art, where she met John in 1957. The two eventually married in 1962 and had one son together, Julian. After the marriage ended in 1968, Cynthia continued to promote her husband's music and later became an artist in her own right. Following John's death in 1980, Cynthia wrote a memoir about her life, entitled A Twist of Lennon. In her later years, Cynthia promoted world peace and worked on a campaign to reduce the violence in Ireland. She turned to philanthropy, founding a charity to provide medical aid to children in Iraq and Palestine. Cynthia is survived by her son Julian, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She will be remembered for her strength, her love of the arts, and her devotion to peace both in her home and abroad.
