It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Daniel Ellsberg on June 16, 2023. He was 92 years old. Daniel Ellsberg was a prominent American activist and former United States military analyst. He was most known for his role in releasing the Pentagon Papers in 1971, revealing information about the Vietnam War to the public, and a long-time advocate for peace and nuclear disarmament. A native of Detroit, Michigan, he received his bachelor’s degree in Economics from Harvard University in 1952, and his doctorate in Economics from King’s College, Cambridge in 1959. After graduating, he joined the US Marine Corps as a naval officer and served two years in the Far East. He then returned to Harvard in 1962, where he became a strategic analyst for the Rand Corporation. In 1964, he worked as special assistant to Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs. It was at this time that he became heavily involved in the US government’s plans for the Vietnam War, which eventually led him to leak the Pentagon Papers in 1971. The papers revealed classified information about the conflict and were highly controversial. The leak was the result of his moral conviction that ending the war was a priority and resulted in his being charged with espionage and theft. His trial was later declared a mistrial. Throughout his life, Daniel Ellsberg was heavily involved in numerous issues related to peace and nuclear disarmament. He was a long-time consultant to pro-democracy dissidents, and national security experts in the United States, Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East, and North Africa. He was an outspoken critic of US policy in Iraq and advocated for the closure of the US detention facilities in Guantanamo Bay. Daniel Ellsberg will be remembered as a passionate advocate for change and an unwavering proponent of justice and peace.

There is a sacredness in tears. They are not the mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are the messengers of overwhelming grief, of deep contrition, and of unspeakable love. Washington Irving
