It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Daniel Inouye on Monday, December 17, 2012 at the age of 88. Daniel Inouye was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on September 7, 1924, and was a senior United States Senator from Hawaii at the time of his death. Inouye served in the U.S. Army during World War II, earning numerous distinctions, including the Medal of Honor, the Purple Heart, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. As a senator, he gained distinction for his work on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (1975–76) and the Senate select committee investigating the Iran-Contra affair (1987–89). Daniel Inouye is survived by his wife, Irene Hirano Inouye, his son, Daniel Ken Inouye Jr., and his daughter, Jennifer Inouye. He is also survived by his five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He will be remembered for his service to the nation, his heroism, and his dedication to his community and country. He will be deeply missed.
