Marshall McLuhan, one of the most influential communication theorists of the 20th century, died on December 31, 1980, at the age of 69. McLuhan, born in Edmonton, Alberta, earned his BA in English Literature from the University of Manitoba in 1939, and his MA in 1941. He became one of the first people to teach media studies at the University of Toronto in 1946, and was awarded a Ph.D. in Communications Theory in 1962. McLuhan wrote several seminal works on communications theory, including “The Mechanical Bride,” “Understanding Media,” “Culture Is Our Business,” and “The Medium Is the Massage.” He was a groundbreaking philosopher who foresaw how media technology would affect the way people communicate and the society around them. He was hailed as one of the “fathers of the Information Age” and his work had a profound influence on the development of television, film, and Internet technology. His influence has been recognized by many, with the naming of a McLuhan Scholarship at the University of Toronto, as well as McLuhan Fellowships in the United States and Canada. McLuhan will be remembered as one of the greatest minds of the 21st century whose work shaped the way we communicate today.
