David Rockefeller, a titan of American business, philanthropy, and diplomacy, died peacefully at age 101 on March 20, 2017. Born June 12, 1915 in New York City, New York, he was the youngest of six sons of Standard Oil Company founder John D. Rockefeller, Jr. and the grandchild of Standard Oil Company founder John D. Rockefeller, Sr. Nurtured to value education and public service and proved himself as a tenacious and talented businessman, David Rockefeller succeeded his father as chairman and chief executive officer of Chase Manhattan Bank from 1969 to 1980 and remained as chairman of the bank's international advisory committee until his death. Throughout his long career in finance, Rockefeller diligently devoted his spare time to public service and philanthropy, working tirelessly to improve the quality of life for people in the United States and around the world. He was particularly pleased with the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and his lifelong dedication, support and financial contribution helped the fund operate, touching many lives. In recognition of his outstanding service to the community, Rockefeller was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilian honor, by President Ford in 1998. He also received the Legion d’Honneur, France’s most prestigious award, in 1995 and was awarded the UK’s Order of Merit in 2002. Rockefeller is survived by his wife of more than 60 years, Peggy Dulany; his four children; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. His only sister, Abby, died in 1976 and his five older brothers all predeceased him. He will be greatly missed.

Try as much as possible to be wholly alive with all your might, and when you laugh, laugh like hell. And when you get angry, get good and angry. Try to be alive. You will be dead soon enough. William Saroyan
