John D. Rockefeller Jr. (July 8, 1874 – May 11, 1960) passed away peacefully on May 11, 1960 at the age of 86. He was a noted businessman, financier, and philanthropist; the only son of Standard Oil founder John D. Rockefeller. His formative years were spent learning at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island and then in 1897, he entered the family business, Standard Oil. After his father's retirement in 1897, he assumed control and the company grew to become the largest in the world. He is well known for being a significant patron and philanthropist in the 20th century. He oversaw projects including the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg and the establishment of the Rockefeller Foundation and the Institute for Medical Research. He was awarded the Medal of Merit for his invaluable efforts in World War II and also awarded honorary degrees from institutions across the United States. He took great pride in leaving an indelible mark on American business and culture, as well as numerous educational and charitable endeavors that will be remembered for generations to come. He will be deeply missed.
