David Ruffin, renowned singer and a former member of the Motown group The Temptations, passed away on June 1, 1991. He was 50 years old. David Edward Ruffin was born in Whynot, Mississippi in 1941. At an early age, he began singing in church. He was quickly recognized as a prodigious vocalist. As a teenager he moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he soon joined The Temptations and achieved fame as a lead vocalist. His trademark rasp and distinct deep voice helped create timeless hits. When David left The Temptations he built a successful solo career with hit singles such as “My Whole World Ended (The Moment You Left Me)”, “Walk Away from Love”, and “Statue of a Fool”. He received several awards, including a Grammy nomination, and in 1987 he was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His work with The Temptations was further honored by a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. David Ruffin will always be remembered as one of the most soulful and influential voices of the 20th century. He was a vibrant source of inspiration for generations of musicians and music fans alike. He is survived by his love, JoAnne Barbone and four children: Duanne, Jimmy, David Jr., and Cindy.
