Denholm Elliott, the award-winning British actor, passed away at age 70 on October 6th, 1992. Best known for his memorable roles in the films "Trading Places", "Raiders of the Lost Ark, and "A Room with a View," Elliott was recognized as one of Britain's finest and most recognizable character actors. Born in London in 1922, Elliott was the son of a brigadier general and chief and district commissioner. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1945 and started his theatrical career with a six-month tour of duty in Iraq with the Entertainment Group of the British Army. Elliott's profile as an actor rose quickly, with him creating a range of well-drawn characters on the stage and screen. A four-time Oscar-nominee, he gained his most awards recognition for his work in 1985's "A Room with a View," which garnered him a BAFTA, the Cannes Film Festival Best Supporting Actor award and his fourth Oscar nomination. Aside from his acting accomplishments, Elliott was a noted philanthropist who helped raise awareness of multiple sclerosis and century. He was a passionate public supporter of many charities, including Amnesty International, the United Nations Association, and the British Red Cross. Elliott is survived by his wife, Susan Robinson. He will be deeply missed by the entertainment industry and those whose lives he touched during his remarkable career.
