Diego Rivera, one of the most influential Mexican painters and muralists of the twentieth century, passed away on November 25, 1957 at the age of 70. Born in 1886, Rivera was renowned for his “large-scale wall paintings” that featured Mexican themes and complex iconography. His works explore political and social issues such as capitalism and racism, and his dynamic style has inspired generations of artists around the world. Described by art historian Hasso Eessen as “the most powerful muralist in the revolution,” Rivera studied art in Europe and eventually became a leader of the Mexican Mural Renaissance that flourished in the 1920s and 1930s. In addition to his artistic achievements, Rivera worked to promote Mexican culture throughout his life and was a vocal advocate of Mexican independence. He was a founder of the Mexican Communist Party in 1919. Rivera's work will continue to influence art history for many years to come, and he will be deeply missed by friends and admirers.
