Douglas MacArthur, war hero and five-star U.S. Army General, passed away in his Washington, D.C. home on Thursday, April 5, 1964 at the age of 84. MacArthur is best remembered for the leadership he demonstrated during World War II; his exploits during the war were cited by historians as instrumental in achieving the Allied victory over Japan. After achieving the rank of five star General, he was put in charge of Allied occupation forces in Japan. MacArthur was also responsible for formulating an occupation policy to govern Japan that was aimed at indefinite self-governance and democratization. MacArthur earned a total of 30 military decorations and medals, five of them from the United States, including the Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Distinguished Service Medal, and the Philippine Defense Medal. In his personal life, he was married three times and had one son. His legacy as a courageous and tactical war hero will never be forgotten. He will be laid to rest in Norfolk, Virginia, with full military honors.
