Elgin Baylor, a renowned athlete and Hall of Fame basketball player, died on March 22, 2021, at the age of 86. Baylor was a gifted athlete and a dominant basketball player who changed the sport's style of play. He was born in Washington, D.C. in 1934, and he attended college at Seattle University, where his basketball career flourished. In 1958, he was the number 1 overall pick in the first ever NBA draft, and he joined the Minneapolis Lakers (now the Los Angeles Lakers). He played for Minneapolis-Los Angeles Lakers over 14 seasons. During his time with them, he averaged 27.4 points per game and 13.5 rebounds. He was a talented scorer, a gifted passer, and a tenacious rebounder; he was known for outstanding scoring performances, such as his then-NBA-record 71-point effort in November 1960. In 1974, Baylor was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and in 1977 he was named one of the top 50 greatest players in NBA history. Additionally, he served as a General Manager of the Los Angeles Clippers for 22 years until 2008, when he announced his retirement. During that time, he was a key member of the team in its rise to become one of the top franchises in the NBA. He is survived by his wife, Elaine, and their children Alan, Allison, and Alvin.

When we finally know we are dying, and all other sentient beings are dying with us, we start to have a burning, almost heartbreaking sense of the fragility and preciousness of each moment and each being, and from this can grow a deep, clear, limitless compassion for all beings. Sogyal Rinpoche
