Elie Wiesel, world-renowned Holocaust survivor and Nobel Laureate, died on July 2, 2016 at the age of 87. Born in 1928 in Sighet, Romania, Elie was forced to live in Nazi concentration camps with his parents and three sisters during the Holocaust. He wrote about his experience in his highly acclaimed memoir, “Night.” After the war, he immigrated to France, and then moved to the United States in 1956. Elie was an passionate advocate for peace and human rights. He was dedicated to “bear witness” for victims of oppression and worked diligently to combat indifference and intolerance. He founded the Elie Wiesel Foundation to advance his mission, which was to “promote human rights and to fight indifference, injustices and intolerance.” In addition, he was a professor of the Humanities, the Arthur F. Burns Chair of Jewish Studies at Boston University, and wrote numerous books on the subject of the Holocaust. In 1986, Elie won the Nobel Peace Prize for his powerful works advocating for peaceful solutions to conflicts, rights of victims of war, and a spirit of understanding between nations. For his lifetime of service, Elie was bestowed numerous awards and honors including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the U.S. Congressional Gold Medal and the four Freedom Awards. Elie was a force for good and will be greatly missed.
