On September 20, 2005, Holocaust survivor and activist Simon Wiesenthal passed away at the age of 96. Widely recognized as a man who devoted his life to bringing Nazi war criminals to justice, Simon was born in 1908 in what is today known as Ukraine. In 1940, he was taken from his home by the German SS and placed in a concentration camp, where he managed to survive. After the end of the war, he vowed to find war criminals and, track them to wherever they fled. He worked with Allied investigators to help bring more than 1,100 to justice. His work did not go unrecognized. In 1962, Simon was awarded the Rothschild Foundation Award. In 2004, he was honored with the honoris causa doctoral degree from the University of Tel Aviv. Simon Wiesenthal was admired for his tireless efforts and his convictions in the fight for justice. He will be greatly missed by those that knew him and by those who admired him.
