Emily Davison, an iconic suffragette, passed away on June 8th, 1913 at the age of 40. She was born in London, England. She was an active member of the Women's Social and Political Union, militant organisation in the British suffragette movement. She was known for numerous acts of protest, including the most notorious, throwing herself in front of King George V’s horse at the Epsom Derby on June 4 1913. Though this action caused her serious injuries eventually leading to her death, it increased visibility for her cause and the suffragette movement in general. She will be remembered as a passionate and committed advocate for women’s rights. Her lasting legacy will be felt for future generations.
