Ernest Shackleton, legendary explorer and leader, died at the age of 47 on January 5th, 1922. Born in Ireland in 1874, Ernest began his career in the merchant navy, eventually working his way to command of his own ship. It was his expeditions to Antarctica, however, that Shackleton is best remembered for. In 1901, Shackleton joined an expedition as third officer which would eventually be led by Robert Falcon Scott. After the expedition, in 1907, Shackleton led his own expedition on the Nimrod. Although he failed to reach the South Pole, his journey provided valuable knowledge of the Antarctic region. In 1914, Shackleton returned to the Antarctic on the Endurance. His goal was to be the first to cross the frozen continent on foot. The expedition, however, was stopped short due to a heavy pack of sea ice. For the next nine months, the crew spent their time drifting, fishing, and foraging for food until eventually the ship was crushed and the crew was forced to abandon it in the ice and sail for a nearby island. Against all odds, the crew eventually made it to safety in 1916. Ernest Shackleton will be remembered as a leader and an explorer who never gave up, and who showed great strength and courage in the face of danger.
