Ezra Pound, the widely renowned American poet, passed away on November 1, 1972 at the age of 87. Born in Idaho on October 30, 1885, Pound spent much of his life abroad and was renowned as a major figure in the modernist movement in poetry. His works, including The Cantos, Hugh Selwyn Mauberley and Personae, drew influence from a variety of sources—ranging from Catholicism, myth and the classical world—encompassing vast amounts of languages and cultures. Pound was also an influential critic and editor, introducing the world to such poets as James Joyce, T.S. Elliot and Robert Frost. His work was heralded for its modernist experimentations and tremendous influence in the realm of literature. Pound's later years saw him suffer from a series of health struggles, including congestive heart failure, an ulcer, as well as dementia. His passing marked an end to his more than four decades of significant contributions and innovations to the world of literature. He is survived by his wife and daughter.
