James Joyce, an Irish exponent of the modernist movement in literature, passed away on January 13th, 1941 at the age of 58. He is most remembered for his standing as one of the most influential and creative writers of his generation, for his major works Ulysses (1922) and Finnegans Wake (1939). Born in Dublin on February 2nd, 1882, Joyce was educated at Clongowes Wood College and Belvedere College before studying at University College, Dublin. He left Ireland in 1904 and spent much of his life abroad, living in Trieste, Zurich and Paris, with all the major characters of his works drawn from his own experience in Dublin and locations he came to know following his emigration. His writing aimed to break free of the traditional narrative structure and instead employ the use of interior monologue, stream-of-consciousness, parody, and symbolism. The sheer difficulty of his works they become much more appreciated in the decades that followed his death, and led to the rise of a whole new canon of modernist literature. Joyce's work and his spirit continue to be read and celebrated by generations of readers. His timeless contributions to the literary world will forever be remembered.

Do not fear death. Death is always at our side. When we show fear, it jumps at us faster than light. But, if we do not show fear, it casts its eye upon us gently and then guides us into infinity. Laughing Bull
