On Tuesday, August 3, 1924, Joseph Conrad passed away at his home in London, England, at the age of 66. He will be remembered for his contributions to literature, his success as a novelist, and also his service to the British Navy. Joseph Conrad was born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski in 1857 in a small part of Poland that belonged to the Russian Empire. A few years later his father joined the ranks of the Polish revolutionaries, and was eventually arrested and sent away to a prison in Siberia, leaving Joseph's mother to raise him and his sisters without a husband's help. Joseph Conrad's family moved to Ukraine, and there Conrad studied English with the aim of joining the Merchant Navy. He eventually did enroll and registered on a British ship, and signed his loyalty papers to the British Crown. He worked on sailing vessels all over the world and thus gained the experience and knowledge that would later serve him to write his stories. In 1894, he wrote his first novel, "Almayer's Folly", and from then on, he wrote several novels, including "The Secret Agent", "The Heart of Darkness", "Lord Jim", "Nostromo", "The Rescue", "Under Western Eyes", and "Victory". His works were both critically acclaimed and commercially successful. Joseph Conrad was a master of telling stories with unexpected twists that kept his readers engrossed until the very end. His work earned him several awards, including the Order of Merit in 1924. Joseph Conrad will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by everyone who knew and admired his works.

Those men who, in war, seek to preserve their lives at any rate commonly die with shame and ignominy, while those who look upon death as common to all, and unavoidable, and are only solicitous to die with honour, oftener arrive at old age and, while they live, live happier. Xenophon
