Legendary game show host Gene Rayburn passed away on November 29, 1999 at the age of 81. Rayburn was born in Christopher, Illinois, in 1917. As an adult, he performed on radio and in early television, working as an announcer, emcee, and quizmaster. Rayburn became a household name when he began hosting Match Game in 1962. The show ran until 1969, returning in 1973 and 1978. Throughout the entirety of its run, Rayburn shone as the witty, unique host fans adored. In addition to Match Game, Rayburn was host of the long-running game show The Hollywood Squares from 1966 to 1980. After his tenure on the show, he returned in 1986 and 1988. Rayburn's legacy lives on through the game shows he hosted, as well as his likeness, which appeared on the cover of TV Guide numerous times throughout his career. His death marks the end of an era of classic television, leaving a lasting impact on game show history. He will be remembered for his charm, wit, and the joy he brought to millions of fans.
