Georges Pompidou, the 15th President of the French Republic, died on April 2, 1974 at the age of 62. He served as President from 1969 until his untimely death. Born in 1911 to a working-class family in Montboudif, he rose from humble beginnings to become a respected statesman and leader. Georges Pompidou will be remembered for his pro-European stance, and his part in leading France into the European Economic Community. He also modernized France’s welfare and educational systems, strengthened the French Army, and provided millions of French citizens with improved housing and culture. In addition to politics, Pompidou was also an avid art collector, and is credited with building the world-renowned Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris. The cultural centre houses Europe’s largest collection of modern art. He is survived by his three children, Pierre, Claude, and Françoise. The French people have lost a respected leader and passionate advocate for culture and the arts. Georges Pompidou will be fondly remembered for his steadfast dedication to his country and his legacy of innovation and progress.
