Jacques Chirac, the former two-term President of France, passed away on Thursday, September 26th, 2019, aged 86. A career politician, Chirac held numerous offices through the years, starting as Prime Minister under the late President François Mitterrand in 1986. In 1995, he was elected President of France, a position he would hold until 2007. During his 12 years in office, Chirac made significant improvements in French society, especially with regards to healthcare and housing, while increasing participation in international organizations such as the United Nations and NATO. Chirac was a celebrated statesman and held many honorary titles. In 1997, Israel bestowed upon the former President the title of “Honorary Member of Knesset”, an award previously limited to only a handful of people. Chirac will be remembered as both a reformer and a diplomat. May he rest in peace.
