On July 28th, 1940, the world lost celebrated artist Gerda Wegener. Wegener, born in 1886 in Copenhagen, Denmark, left a remarkable career in the art world. At 21, she first published her illustrations and was hired as a fashion illustrator in the journal Politiken, which brought her and her artwork to the public's attention. Wegener is perhaps best known for her colorful and vivid portraits of historical, literary, and religious figures, which she crafted in the classic Art Nouveau style. Later, Wegener shifted to a post-impressionist style, and her paintings introduced the avant-garde stylings of contemporary Paris to the public. Some of her most famous works include portraits of her wife, transgender artist Lili Elbe, as well as commissioned portraits of aristocrats, dancers, and ballerinas. Wegener died at age 54 in Horsens, Denmark in 1940. Her legacy as an artist lives on.
