Glenda Eileen Jackson (1936–2023), noted actor, had a remarkable career that spanned over fifty years. She most famously received two Academy Awards for Best Actress, for her performances in Women in Love (1969) and A Touch of Class (1973). Called a “force of nature” by many, Glenda made her professional stage debut at the age of 18 in the British production The Musgrave Ritual. In 1961, she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company before venturing into film and television. During her time in the entertainment industry, Glenda appeared in dozens of films, television shows, and stage productions. Her activism included working with anti-war and nuclear disarmament movements throughout her career. She was also the Labour Member of Parliament for Hampstead and Highgate from 1992 to 2015. Glenda’s most noted performance, however, was her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I in the television miniseries Elizabeth R (1971). Glenda Eileen Jackson died on June 15, 2023, at the age of 87. She is survived by her husband, Roy, and her many children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her legacy of determination and achievement will forever be remembered.
