Gloria Swanson, a Hollywood icon and pioneer of the silent movie era, passed away on April 4th, 1983, at the age of 84. Gloria Swanson was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 27th, 1899. She started her career on the stage at the age of sixteen, and later starred in a series of silent films in the 1920s, including “Sadie Thompson” and “Beyond the Rocks”. Swanson’s popularity skyrocketed, and she went on to become one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood. She starred in a string of silent and sound films in the 1930s, including “Indiscreet”, “The Trespasser”, and “Twentieth Century”, which is widely considered to be one of the defining films of that era. She was also nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in the 1932 movie “Tonight or Never”. In addition to her acting career, Gloria Swanson was also a devoted philanthropist. She donated generously to numerous causes, including the Red Cross, the American Cancer Society, and her favorite charity, the United Nations Children’s Fund. Gloria Swanson will remain in the hearts and minds of movie fans everywhere. She will be sorely missed.
