Guccio Gucci, noted fashion designer and business magnate, passed away on January 2nd, 1953 at the age of 71. Gucci was born in 1881 in Florence, Italy, to parents Maria and Alessandro Gucci. He is best known for founding the fashion house, Gucci, in 1921, which is most renowned for its leather goods and accessories. Gucci’s career in the fashion industry began in 1902 when he worked for a London luxury goods store. After a brief stint in the military, he returned to Florence as the manager of the Savoy Hotel. Later on in his career he returned to working in the fashion industry, eventually leading him to found the brand that would become his namesake. In 1944, his son Aldo was named Vice President of the company, leading to a shift in fashion trends that would have a lasting impact. By the time of his death in 1953, Gucci had grown to have over 200 stores around the world. Gucci’s lasting legacy can be seen in the many fashion houses, trends, and styles he created from the iconic Hermès-style patterned leather handbag to the bold canvas backpacks. Gucci’s masterful combination of art and business is one that reflects a creative eye motivated by financial success. From his humble beginnings, he created a world-renowned fashion empire. He will be remembered as the father of modern fashion.
