Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) passed away on February 6, 1918 in Vienna, Austria at age 55. He was an influential and groundbreaking Austrian symbolist painter who was a leader in the Vienna Secession movement. Klimt was best known for his paintings, murals, and sketches, with notable works such as The Kiss, Judith I and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer. He often used gold and silver leaf in his pieces, creating an innovative and unique art style that was entwined with Symbolism. His work was greatly appreciated and he achieved success in his lifetime. During his lifetime, Klimt received several awards including the Golden Order of Merit from Franz Josef I of Austria in 1905. He was highly sought after for his masterful skill as a painter, and was one of the most respected artists in the Vienna Secession. Klimt's intricate and often controversial artwork still has an undeniable influence on artists today. His work lives on and continues to inspire.
