Gwen Verdon, best known for her long-running performance as the original Roxie Hart in the Broadway production of Chicago, passed away on October 18, 2000 at the age of 75. Verdon was born in Los Angeles in 1925 and was raised in a stage family. Her parents taught tap dance, and she began performing with them at an early age. She was married to legendary choreographer and director Bob Fosse in 1960 and appeared in several of his films, including Sweet Charity and All That Jazz. In 1975, Verdon joined the Broadway production of Chicago as the original character, Roxie Hart. She was the first actress to portray the iconic role and was known for her recognizable singing voice. Verdon was an iconic actress and dancer whose career was decorated with multiple Tony Awards. She will be remembered by fans all over the world.
