Haji Mastan, one of the most influential underground figures in Indian organized crime, died on June 25, 1994, at the age of 68. Born Mastan Mirza on 1 March 1926 in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, Mastan began as a smuggler in the mid-20th century Mumbai. He rose in prominence to become one of the most respected criminals in the city, running an international crime syndicate involving smuggling, gambling, extortion, and counterfeiting. Mastan was able to blend into Mumbai's high society and his aura of power and grandeur was reflected in the pearls, diamonds, and silks that he wore, as well as the luxury cars that he imported and used. He was also known for his generosity and loyalty to his people. Mastan's death marked the end of an era in the underworld of Indian organized crime. His accomplishments during his final years, particularly his involvement in the diamond business, will continue to serve as an example of his shrewdness, determination, and legendary status.
