On 19 January 2000, acclaimed actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr passed away at age 85. Lamaar was born in Vienna, Austria, and was widely recognized by audiences around the world for her performance in movies such as Ecstasy and Samson and Delilah. Her career in Hollywood began in 1933 and spanned decades. In addition to her fame as a Hollywood star, she achieved recognition of her scientific accomplishments in the form of her groundbreaking invention of the spread spectrum technology, which laid the foundation for early precursors to WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth. Her famed contributions to technology have earned her a spot in the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Lamarr was remembered as an accomplished actress as well as an inspiring inventor. Although she is no longer with us, her legacy will live on for generations.
