Marlene Dietrich, one of Hollywood’s most iconic and remarkable female stars, died on May 6 1992. She was 90 years old. Born in Schoneberg, Germany in 1901, Dietrich started her theatrical career in the 1920s, gaining recognition for her roles in musicals and dramas. She forged a legendary career as a performing artist in America; known for her charm, wit and beauty, she won the hearts of audiences around the country. After making her film debut with The Blue Angel (1930), Dietrich made a name for herself in Hollywood, launching an illustrious career with over sixty roles in both Hollywood and European cinema. Some of her most famous films include The Scarlet Empress (1934), The Devil is a Woman (1935), Destry Rides Again (1939) and Judgment at Nuremberg (1961). In addition to performing in movies, she spent much of her time in cabaret and sought to use her celebrity status to support humanitarian causes, particularly relating to women’s rights and her adopted country during World War II. She is remembered for her activism, laconic wit and unmistakable style, inspiring many people to this day. Dietrich died surrounded by family and friends, her legacy remaining a fascination in the hearts of movie lovers for generations to come.
