Hoagy Carmichael, legendary composer and singer of a wide array of popular music in the United States, passed away peacefully on December 27, 1981, at the age of 82. Carmichael was born on November 22, 1899 in Bloomington, Indiana. He was a gifted musician from an early age and studied piano and law during his college years at Indiana University. After completing law school, Carmichael decided to pursue music as a profession and went on to compose some of the world's most recognizable songs, including "Stardust," "The Nearness of You," "Georgia on My Mind," "Chicago (That Toddling Town)" and "In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening." In addition to his career in music, Carmichael was also an actor and appeared in a handful of films in his lifetime, notably 1953's The Glen Miller Story. Carmichael's legacy of timeless music will be cherished forever by his family and many devoted fans.
