In addition to his extensive film career, he was also cast in numerous stage productions in Germany. Buchholz began his career in theater as a teenager and went on to perform in both film and television. He received two Golden Globe nominations during his career, one for Most Promising Newcomer in the film "The Young Lions," and the other in 1960 for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for "The Magnificent Seven". He later directed several films in Germany, and relocated to Switzerland at the height of his career, due in part to economic and political turmoil in the 1960s. Buchholz is remembered as a talented artist who had a lasting impact in both German and American film and theater.
