Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak died today at the age of 91. He was born on an unknown date in Kafr-el Meselha, Egypt. He led Egypt from 1981 to 2011 and played a significant role in regional politics through his tenure as president. He joined the Air Force Academy in 1949 and eventually rose to the rank of Air Force commander, a post he held from 1972 to 1975. Mubarak served as vice president from 1975 to 1981 before assuming the role of president on October 14, 1981. During his tenure, he authored several reforms promoting economic development and reducing unemployment. He also oversaw the successful completion of the Aswan High Dam, a project that supplied electricity to the entire country. He worked closely with many Middle Eastern and international organizations, such as the United Nations, to promote peace in the region. In 2011, after months of peaceful protests nationwide, Mubarak stepped down from his post and handed control of the government to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces. He was convicted of various charges, including embezzlement, in 2012, but was acquitted of the charges on March 2, 2017. Hosni Mubarak is survived by his two sons and daughters.
