On September 10, 1935, Huey Pierce Long, 42, died after being shot by Dr. Carl Weiss in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. A son of former Louisiana governor Huey P. Long and former school teacher Caledonia Tison Long, he was born in Winnfield, Louisiana, in 1893. He attended public schools in Winnfield, and later studied law at Tulane Law School. Long was a highly influential and powerful figure in Louisiana politics and he became the most powerful political figure in the state’s history. In 1928, Long was elected governor and launched a successful campaign to restructure state government and improve the lives of the state's citizens. In addition to his work in politics, Long was also an advocate for a number of social programs and was also a vocal critic of his state's business practices and taxation. He gained national attention for his "Share Our Wealth" speech, which proposed expanding the social safety net. He is remembered for his commitment to the people of Louisiana and his advocacy for progressive causes. He will be mourned by his many friends and colleagues.
