Huey P. Newton, 47, passed away on August 22, 1989. He was a prominent figure during the Civil Rights Movement and co-founder of the Black Panther Party. A native of Oakland, California, Huey P. Newton found early success as a civil rights activist. His efforts were integral for challenging institutional racism and advancing civil rights during the 1960s. In 1966, he co-founded the Black Panther Party, the Marxist-Leninist revolutionary organization which advocated the use of revolutionary violence and revolutionary socialism to achieve social change. Throughout his career, Huey P. Newton spoke frequently in favor of black nationalism, and opposed police brutality and racism. His work helped shape the narrative of civil rights during the 1960s, inspiring future generations of activists and activists to fight for equity and inclusion. He received multiple awards and honorary degrees in recognition of his work, including a Doctor of Humanities from the University of Massachusetts Boston. Huey P. Newton’s work served as a beacon of hope for many throughout the civil rights era, and his legacy will live on for years to come. He will be dearly missed.
