Igor Stravinsky, a Russian-born composer, conductor, and pianist, died at the age of 88 in New York City on April 6, 1971. Stravinsky is widely regarded as one of the most influential composers of the 20th century. He is best known for his "The Rite of Spring" ballet, which provoked a riot upon its 1913 premiere in Paris. He wrote works for symphony orchestra, chamber music, ballet and opera, many of which are still performed today. Stravinsky was born in Oranienbaum, a city near St. Petersburg, Russia, on June 17, 1882. As a child, he studied music and began studying piano and composition at the age of 9. By the age of 15, he was already composing and by the time he entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1901, he had already written several works. During his lifetime, Stravinsky won numerous awards, including two GRAMMYs in 1962 and 1965 and was made an honorary knight of the British Empire in 1967. His influence on the art world still resonates. He inspired a generation of composers and his works remain as a lasting legacy of the extraordinary man and musician he was. Igor Stravinsky will be remembered by the musical community as an innovative and influential composer, pianist and conductor who forever changed the landscape of classical music.
