On May 12th, 1935, Józef Piłsudski - a beloved hero of Poland - passed away in Warsaw aged 67. Józef was born into a noble family in 1867 in Zalavas, Lithuania, part of the Russian Empire. After an early career in politics, he fought against the Tsar in the Russian Revolution of 1905. During WWI, he mobilized the Polish Legions and fought the Russians to help restore Polish independence. In November 1918, Józef was declared chief of state and took control of Poland's destiny after 123 years of foreign rule. Most recently, Józef served as Poland's de facto Head of State from 1926 to 1935. Józef was famous for his service to the Polish nation. He expressed his unpopular views and his beliefs never wavered. He was a changing force of the history of Poland, and his name will be remembered for generations to come for his revolutionary spirit. His passing is mourned throughout the country, and he will be deeply missed.
