James B. Donovan (1917-1970) passed away on January 19, 1970 at the age of 53. He was born on February 29, 1917 in New York, New York. James was a successful lawyer and a decorated United States Navy veteran. He served in both World War II and the Korean War, ultimately receiving the Legion of Merit and Bronze Star. He is perhaps best remembered for representing one of the Soviet spies Rudolf Abel in his historic trial. After his service in the Navy, James went on to have a successful career as an attorney in New York City. He was appointed a U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York in the late 1950s, and eventually went into private practice in 1961. James will be remembered for his dedication to the legal profession, and for his courage and selflessness in serving his country.
