James Hunt, the former Formula One world champion racer, passed away on June 15, 1993, at the age of 45. James had a reputation as an aggressive yet charismatic driver and was an international star in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Born in England in 1947, James’ first career was as a lifeguard. He quickly rose through the ranks of motor racing, winning his first championship in 1974. This was followed by a win at the Formula One World Drivers' Championship in 1976, making him the first British driver to do so since Jackie Stewart. In total, he raced in Formula One for nine seasons and his career spanned five constructors: Hesketh, McLaren, Wolf, Hesketh again, and then finally McLaren again. In 1977 and 1979, he was runner-up in the championship in what was a tremendous career on the track, but it was off the track where James made his name. His reputation as a playboy, bringing glamour and energy to the sport, secured his legendary status. James Hunt ultimately made 142 starts at Grand Prix, amassing 10 wins, 101 qualification attempts on pole position, eight fastest laps and 20 podium finishes. James Hunt will be remembered as a champion and a showman, and his memory will live on in the history and lore of motor racing.
