On November 7, 2025, at 97 years old, James D. Watson passed away. He was an American molecular biologist, geneticist, and zoologist who made groundbreaking contributions to the field of genetics and molecular biology. Born on April 6, 1928, in Chicago, Illinois, Watson received his undergraduate degree in zoology from the University of Chicago and went on to pursue a graduate degree in genetics from Indiana University. In 1953, alongside Francis Crick, Watson discovered the structure of DNA, which revolutionized the field of genetics and led to the development of new technologies and treatments for various diseases. For this groundbreaking discovery, Watson and Crick were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1962. Throughout his career, Watson continued to make significant contributions to genetics and molecular biology, publishing numerous papers and books. He also held prestigious positions at institutions such as Harvard University, the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and the National Institutes of Health. While his work sparked controversy at times, Watson's contributions to the scientific community will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come. He leaves behind a lasting impact on the field of genetics and will be greatly missed by his colleagues, students, and the entire scientific community.
