Janet Reno, the first female United States Attorney General, passed away at the age of 78 in Miami, Florida on November 7, 2016. Reno was appointed in 1993 by President Bill Clinton to serve as the Attorney General of the United States, a position she held for almost eight years. She was the first woman to ever serve in that role. Reno's tenure included the successful prosecution of the active federal terrorism case, United States vs. Omar Abdel Rahman et al., the 1996 Atlanta Olympics bombing plot. Reno graduated from Harvard Law School in 1963 and served as a prosecutor for Miami-Dade County and Dade County sole from 1973 to 1978. She also served two terms as the state attorney for Miami-Dade County. From 1978 to 1993, she served under six Florida Governors as a state attorney and rose to the rank of Florida's first female attorney general. Reno was an advocate for civil and human rights. She worked to reform the criminal justice system and promote law enforcement strategies that individualized justice with a focus on rehabilitation and reentry programs. Under Reno's leadership, the Attorney General prosecutorial office attained numerous successes, including the conviction of the notorious Unabomber and Oklahoma City terrorist, Timothy McVeigh, among many others. Reno is survived by her sister, Maggy Hurchalla, her nieces and nephews, and her beloved great-nieces and great-nephews. Her memory and her legacy of strong and effective prosecution will never be forgotten.
