On 2022-09-13 00:00:00 UTC, Jean- Luc Godard passed away at 91 years old. He was a Swiss-French filmmaker, who has been described by critics as pivotal in the development of film writing, directorial style and production, as well as influencing the French New Wave and international film. Godard was born in 1930 in Paris, France to Swiss parents. He grew up in a family of cinema, literature and philosophy enthusiasts. In 1954, his journey into filmmaking began after being exposed to the works of Italian film directors, including Fellini and Antonioni. His career started as a critic and journalist, writing for film magazines such as Cahiers du Cinéma. Heis directorial debut was in 1958 with special short film ‘Une Femme coquette’. Godard went on to direct films that blurred genre boundaries, often addressing France and it’s culture. His works were vastly varied in terms of style. Some of his best-known works included ‘Breathless’ (1960) and ‘Weekend’ (1967). Godard also wrote novels and numerous articles during his lifetime, these were compiled in books. Godard’s work proved to be enormously influential to the next generations of filmmakers. He continued to be active in the filmmaking industry until his death in 2022. He is survived by his family and friends. He will be remembered as an influential figure in film history and for his lasting legacy in cinema.
