Jim Valvano passed away on April 28, 1993 at the age of 47. Jim Valvano was best known for his success as a college basketball head coach, but he was also an award-winning broadcaster and motivational speaker. Valvano was born in Queens, New York in 1946. He started his climbing up in the basketball world as a university player at Rutgers University. He had a very successful coaching career across multiple schools, most notably North Carolina State University, where his team won the 1983 National Championship over the heavily favored Houston Cougars. Valvano retired from coaching in 1990 and began work as a broadcaster, personality, and motivational speaker. He was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013. Valvano was an inspirational figure before, during, and after his coaching career. His famous words, “Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up,” resonated with millions, and he was a great source of inspiration and motivation. Jim Valvano is survived by his wife, Pam, and his three children, Nicole, Jamie and Lee Ann. He will be greatly missed.
