Jimmy Durante (February 10, 1893 - January 29, 1980) passed away at age 86. He was an Italian-American comedian, actor, singer, and writer. He was originally known in vaudeville as a ragtime pianist, then moved on to Broadway musicals in the 1920s. He became a popular part of American culture, and was known for his trademark nose, deep and gravelly voice, and popular catchphrases such as "Good night, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are." On Broadway, he earned an Emmy Award for his outstanding performance in the musical First Impressions in 1959. In addition, he starred in his own television show, The Jimmy Durante Show, which ran from 1954 to 1956. Throughout his career, he appeared in many films, including It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963). Durante also composed many songs, including the hit song Inka Dinka Doo, which charted for 27 consecutive weeks in 1934. He will be remembered for his distinctive personality and performances, which entertained generations of fans.
