John Herbert Dillinger, 31, died suddenly on July 22, 1934. The Indiana native first came to national prominence in 1933 when he began leading a group of bank robbers in an attempt to break-out of the economic depression. Experienced in firearms and operations, Dillinger soon attracted the attention of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and made headlines for his daring exploits. He was eventually captured in 1934 in Tucson, Arizona and subsequently jailed in Indiana. On July 22, he was released from jail for a court hearing, where he was struck down by bullets during an FBI raid. Dillinger will be remembered as one of the most notorious American criminals of the early 20th century. He left behind no survivors.
