John Money, Ph.D., was born in 1921 and passed away in 2006 at the age of 84. A preeminent American psychologist and sexologist, Money is best known for his work with gender identity, especially his pioneering efforts in gender reassignment for intersex children, and for his research on sexual orientation. During his lifetime, Money earned numerous accolades for his work. He was awarded the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award by the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists; the Kinsey Award by the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality; and honorary doctoral degrees from Uppsala University in Sweden, Leiden University in the Netherlands, and the University of Montreal in Canada, among others. For over 50 years, Money was a faculty member of the John Hopkins University Medical School, where he founded the first gender clinic in the U.S. in 1965. Money's work continues to influence the practice and education of psychology and sexology both in the United States and around the world. John Money was a prolific writer and published more than 20 books and 500 scientific articles on psychology, sexuality, and gender identity. His work was highly influential and will continue to shape the fields of psychology and sexology for years to come.
