Joseph Merrick, known to the world more famously as The Elephant Man, died April 11, 1890, age 27, in London, England. Born in Leicester, England on August 5, 1862, Merrick earned his famous nickname due to his severe physical deformities caused by a rare genetic disorder. He lived most of his life in poverty, earning money from touring with his caretaker Tom Norman. Although his condition is only speculatively diagnosed today, it is believed that Joseph Merrick suffered from Proteus Syndrome, a rare congenital disorder that created severe deformities of the limbs, head, and facial features due to uncontrolled growth in his cells. After suffering relentless personal and public suffering, Merrick was discovered by Doctor Frederic Treves, who researched his condition while attempting to restore a dignified life to the afflicted man. While in Doctor Treves' care, Merrick became an international celebrity and acquired the nickname "The Elephant Man". Joseph Merrick's remarkable life of perseverance and positivity despite his odds served as an inspiration to many. His grace and humility were said to have so deeply touched those around him that he acquired many friends and supporters throughout his life. Joseph Merrick was laid to rest in an unmarked grave in the City of London's Western Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy of courage, resilience and strength that honors his memory forever.
