It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of country music artist Keith Whitley on May 9th, 1989. Born on July 1, 1955, Keith's musical career began in his youth when his family moved to Portsmouth, Ohio in 1963. As a self-taught singer, songwriter, and musician, Keith took the country music scene by storm. Before committing his life to music, he worked various jobs in Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia. Keith's successful career earned him an unprecedented three consecutive "Top New Male Vocalist" awards from the Academy of Country Music in 1985, 1986, and 1987. His signature hits, "Don't Close Your Eyes" and "When You Say Nothing At All," highlighted his ability to execute vocal pyrotechnics. As a pioneer of the crossover movement, he became a household name towards the end of the 1980s. Despite his early success, Keith had a troubled personal life due to substance addiction. He succumbed to the disease at the age of 33, leaving behind many aching hearts. The country music world will never forget Keith Whitley for his incredible artistic talent and indelible presence. May he rest in peace.
If we lose love and self respect for each other, this is how we finally die. Maya Angelou
